Chapter 1
"Howie, honey, I think it's okay if you drive faster than 20 mph," I looked over at Howie and laughed.
"But I don't want to scare the babies!" he said so seriously.
"THEY'RE SLEEPING!! AND THE PEOPLE WHO ARE BEHIND YOU PROBABLY THINK YOU'RE SLEEPING TOO!!"
Howie reluctantly brought the car up to 35 mph. A few people on the highway drove past have and gave him a finger gesture or two. He just smiled and pointed to the "Baby on Board" sign.
When we finally got home from the hospital, Howie grabbed Jacob and I grabbed Nicole and took them inside for their first look at their home. They were both asleep, so I took them upstairs and tucked them into their cribs as Howie went outside to get the rest of our things. I came downstairs to the foyer filled with stuffed animals, flowers and Howie struggling to get the bags and balloons through the door at the same time.
"Geez," Howie gasped, "You would think that our friends and families have never seen babies before!"
"Yeah – I think they went a little extreme on some of these things don't you think?" Howie and I looked around and laughed. "So, do you want to put this stuff away or take a nap?" I asked.
"Nap sounds good to me!" Howie said dropping the bags in the doorway.
I think Howie and I slept for maybe an hour when Jacob woke up wanting to be changed. And of course, ten minutes later Nicole woke up wanting to eat. Howie and I were back to the routine that would encompass the rest of our lives...or at least the next couple of years. I was downstairs in the kitchen making Nicole's bottle when I heard a knock on the door. "Visitors already?" I mumbled to myself. I headed over to the door, put a smile on my face and opened the door.
"WELCOME HOME MOMMY!!" AJ, Amber, Nick, Brian and Kevin shouted. They had more gifts in their arms.
"Well, aren't you going to invite us in?" Brian asked. I motioned for them to come in and they somehow managed to make it through all of the stuffed animals, flowers, bags, etc. that were still lying on the floor from earlier. Amber began to pick up the stuff that was on the floor and placed it around the house so things didn't seem so cluttered.
Howie came down the stairs with both babies crying in his arms. "What do I do now?" he asked with a panicked look on his face.
"You look like you could use a hand D. Why don't you give little Nikki over to me?" Nick asked. Howie handed over his little girl and I handed Nick the bottle. Nick wandered into the living room pointing out different parts of the house to "little Nikki."
"Okay – one down, who wants the other one?" I asked looking over to Amber and AJ.
"Well," AJ said, "I think Amber should get used to holding a boy so hand Jacob over to her."
Amber shook her head and laughed at AJ. "And what if this one isn't a boy?"
"It will be," he smiled. He leaned down to her belly and whispered, "Grow a penis!"
Brian grabbed the phone and ordered a couple of pizzas as Howie and I opened the gifts that everyone had sent over in the past few days for the babies. We got the regular gifts of matching outfits, stuffed animals and other "baby" things. Then we got to the gifts from the guys. Kevin got them those musical pianos that attach to the crib. Brian got Jacob a little basketball outfit and a tiny basketball, while he got a matching cheerleader outfit for Nikki. AJ got matching leopard print hats for them.
"Wait!" Nick shouted, "My gift is in the truck." He handed Nikki over to me and ran outside. He came back in with this giant box.
"Do I really want to know what's in there?" I asked.
"Probably not," he laughed. "But, they won't be able to use it for awhile so it won't be that bad just yet."
Howie shrugged and went over to the box and began to open it. Everyone sat there with their mouths open as they stared at the box.
"Nick...I don't know what to say..." I stuttered.
"No need to say anything!" Nick said so proud of his gift.
"It will definitely be awhile before they can use that," Brian laughed.
"Yeah, well, they say the sooner you start them," Nick said.
"I can't believe you bought newborn babies a drum set, you idiot!" Kevin said.
"What's wrong with a drum set?" Nick asked.
"There is nothing wrong with it Nick...nothing wrong at all. I'm sure that they will love having Uncle Nick teach them how to play the drums," I said as I gave Nick a hug.
"You would figure that since these guys were twins they would get hungry at the same time," Howie muttered.
"That would make our lives too easy then wouldn't it?"
