Shattered Dreams - Broken Promises

Chapter 19

Amber's View

I got myself out of bed anxious to see how my son was doing today. In the past few days he was showing signs of improvement. The doctors had commented that if he kept this up in a few weeks he might be able to go home. I looked over to the bed AJ was laying in next to me. These last couple of days I could tell he was trying to be the husband I needed him to be at this time. He did his best to comfort me when I was feeling at my wits end. He had started spending most of his time in the hospital with me going home only on occasion to change and check up on Arrianna. I walked over, kissed his cheek and covered him better with the blanket.

I walked out of the room and started down the hall towards the neo-natal wing, when someone familiar looking at the front desk caught my eye.
“I need to know what room AJ McLean is in,” the brunette said to the on duty nurse. At the sound of AJ's name I headed over to see if I could help her.
“Can I help you?” I asked walking towards her. “You…what are you doing here?” I asked as Amanda turned around.
“I'm here to see Alex.”
“You have no business being here.”
“I do have business being here! He's my friend and besides I was just returning this to him.” She handed me his wallet.
“Where'd you get this?” I asked trying to hold it with out my hands shaking.
“He left it the bar the other day,” she said as if it were no big deal.
“Oh yeah,” I said trying to sound as if I had known that he was with her. “Well thanks, I'll make sure he gets it.”
“Thanks, and I wish all the best to your son.” I just nodded as she turned around and walked down to the elevator and got on.
I calmly walked back to my room. AJ was just getting up and sitting on the side of the bed. “Hey babe, how's our little buddy doing today?” he said wiping the sleep from his eyes. “What the fuck?!” he said as I threw the wallet at him hitting him hard in the chest.
“Amanda returned that to you,” I said with coldness in my voice.
“Baby let me explain…”
“How could you? Our son was in here fighting for his life and you were in a bar with your ex?!”
“It was nothing, we are just friends! I swear to you!”
“Why, why did you do that?” I asked needing deep down to know.
“I needed someone to talk to; someone besides the guys, someone objective, outside our circle. I wasn't handling this whole situation well. When I saw him for the first time hooked up to all those machines…I…I…I guess I kinda went insane.”
“Is she the old buddy you met the other day?” “Yeah, she called for the same reason I did, she needed a friend to talk to. And I swear to you that's all we are, friends.”
I wanted so bad to believe what he said was true. I think deep down, with all that had happened, I needed to believe it was true. “You swear?”
AJ walked over and tilted my face up towards his, “I swear.”
