Shattered Dreams - Broken Promises

Chapter 25

Amber's View

“Come on Squeak, let's go get you an ice cream cone. You've been such a good girl for mommy today.” I grabbed Arrianna and placed her in the stroller in front of where Tyler was laying. I began pushing the both of them towards the ice cream parlor, looking forward to a sweet snack myself.

I was about half way there when something I saw made me stop dead in my tracks. My heart dropped to my stomach and it was all I could do not to throw up. I quickly turned the stroller around and headed back towards the van. “Iye Ceam!” Arrianna howled as we headed away.

“It's ok baby, we'll get you ice cream a little bit later,” I said trying desperately not to become unglued in front of my children, as I placed both of them in their car seats, Arrianna still howling about her promised ice cream. I slammed my door trying to ignore the pounding in my head. “Shut up!” I turned around and snapped at her. My outburst shocked her enough to stop. With trembling hands I started the car.

“Fuck!” I whispered as I pulled the van into the flow of traffic and nearly missed being hit by an oncoming car. “Pull yourself together Amber,” I told myself as I tried to breathe normally. “Getting into an accident won't do anyone any good. Just concentrate.” But it was no use all I could see was her and him…AJ and Amanda…and that kiss.

* * * *

I was placing the last of my things in my bag as I heard AJ come in the front door. I kept packing.
“Babe, you home?” he asked. I heard him walking through the rooms searching for me. He had probably seen my car in the driveway. I zipped the bag and grabbed the smaller one that contained the children's clothes and grabbed Arrianna who was sitting on the bed sucking her thumb quietly. She had been quiet ever since the incident in the car. I knew she could sense that something was wrong. It was. “Baby?” I walked over to the nursery and gently picked Tyler up out of his crib. “What's going on?” he asked finally having found us, and standing in the doorway of the nursery.

“We're leaving,” I announced and brushed past him with Arrianna in tow.
“What do you mean you're leaving? Where are you going?” he asked following me down the stairs.
“Right now I don't care…as long as it's far away from you!” I shot back angrily the picture of the kiss still vivid in my memory. I flung the door open.
“You're not going anywhere until we straighten out whatever is wrong with you!” AJ reached around me and shut the door. Arrianna clung to my leg with a death grip. I hated that she had to witness this. “Will you please tell me what the fuck going on?!”
My face turned cold as I turned towards him. “I saw you!” I said in a low growl.
“What do you mean you saw me?” he said still slightly confused at what was going on.
“I saw you,” I repeated again. “Both of you…”
His face fell. I could tell he knew exactly what I was talking about. “Honey, let me explain…”
“Let you explain? Explain what?” I asked my voice rising in my rage. “I saw you fucking kissing Amanda in public, there's nothing else for you to fucking explain!” Tyler began to cry in my arms upset from his sleep by the loud sound of my yelling.
“I didn't mean for it to happen! Honey you've got to believe me!”
“You didn't mean for it to happen?!” I asked incredibly. “What your face just ran into hers?”
“Babe it wasn't like that…it was just…”
“Just what?” I asked.
“It's just well we were talking about old times and…”
“I see,” I said quietly as my heart broke into tiny pieces.
“Babe…” AJ said grabbing my arm to stop me as I opened up the door again. “It didn't mean anything.”
“Don't touch me!” I hissed as I jerked out of his grasp and headed towards the van.
“Daddy!” Arrianna cried finally breaking her silence as I strapped her into her car seat. Her arms flailed out, reaching as if to try to grab him and pull him in the van. I closed the door separating them.
I climbed into the driver's side and started the car. “Can't we talk about this?” AJ asked trying one more time to talk to me. “Will you please listen to me?”
I looked at him one more time as a tear rolled down my face. “How could you do that to us?” I pulled out of the driveway before he could see the rest of the tears that followed.
